Diversifying FCPS Library Media Collections: Purpose

Purpose of This Guide

Frederick County Public Schools media specialists are committed to ensuring that our school library collections are representative of all of our students. Each year every media specialist is asked to use the materials found within this guide in order to complete the following: 

  1. Evaulate his/her school library's collection to determine collection needs. 
  2. Determine priorities for the school year for collection development and weeding. 
  3. Develop a plan specific to his/her school's collection and present this plan to his/her principal. 
  4. Share collection development plan with the Supervisor of Media Services. 
  5. Utilize collection development resources found within this guide to select materials that will diversify his/her library collection and adhere to the FCPS selection criteria and guidelines.
  6. Plans will be due by the end of March each year.
  7. Plans developed each year will guide the purchasing decisions for the next school year.  
  8. Submit a year-end summary of purchasing decisions.
