A Thousand Splendid Suns Intro Research: 6. Daily Life, Traditions, and Customs

What does daily life look like for people living in Afghanistan? What are some of the traditional customs and cultural practices that shape daily routines, celebrations, and community life?

Your task is to provide your classmates with an understanding of everyday life in Afghanistan. Consider what people wear, eat, celebrate, and do on a daily basis in both rural and urban areas. Include cultural customs that shape Afghan identity, especially those related to hospitality, dress, food, music, and traditional celebrations.

Criteria: Your visual should include…

  • A brief summary of daily life in Afghanistan, including distinctions between rural and urban areas.
  • At least FOUR meaningful traditions or customs (e.g., hospitality practices, traditional clothing, cuisine, music, tea culture, Nowruz, weddings, etc.).
  • At least TWO conclusions you have reached about how traditions shape Afghan identity and community.
  • Examples to support each conclusion. This support will be research information or anecdotes from news articles or cultural sources.
  • Comprehensive, thoughtful, detailed, explained connections to the novel.
  • Images from your research that increase the viewers’ understanding of your topic.

Note: Your fundamental task is to educate your classmates on how Afghan people live day to day, and how traditions and customs help form their sense of identity and belonging. Don’t focus only on struggles—show the richness of the culture. You are teaching the class about your assigned topic, so be thorough and complete.
